I don't have mobile broadband and have not experienced it here at all. It would be interesting for you to see if it would happen to you on other sites, especially if they use a program like TimeSeal which is supposed to disregard the transmission time when debiting your clock. Such as Chessanytime.com chessanytimecom does.
I have had time loss on two other sites tho, while it was my move. But the clocks there and connections too, were not very reliable at all. One of those sites also knocks you out of the blitz room about every third game, if they get more than 60 games going. The other often forfeits you when your clock still has even 10 or 12 seconds showing on it.

The f-pawn, part 2: is f5 the answer here? — Does White have a better option than moving the f-pawn? Continuing our look at the chess equivalent of route one football – the f-pawn advance... It's a lag issue. Even though the clock appears to stop when you submit a move, it actually keeps going until the move is fully processed by the servers. If you have a solid connection, it won't happen.

Big Surprises in Europe — Europe has been a center of chess activity over the last month with a series of major open tournaments. The first was the Gibtelecom Chess Festival in Gibraltar, which ran from Jan. 26 through Feb. 4. Among the world-class chess players who competed were Etienne Bacrot of France, Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia, Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain, Michael Adams of England, and Gata Kamsky of the United States. The chess tournament ended in a nine-way tie for first, with Adams winning a four-person playoff to take the title. The Moscow Open, which overlapped with Gibtelecom and ended on Feb. 7, was divided into four sections — A, B, C and D — with ...
